Who is behind / responsible for it??

CONSTANT Increase in local university fees, transport fares, utility bill, petrol price, HDB shop rental, GLC shopping shop rental, phone/mobile bill, food, prices @ NTUC ........ and others we can think of.

Increase in rental generally will most of the time up the prices.

Ultimately, you know who are the people who gain from all these increases. $$$$$ is top priority to them.

Sorry for necroing this thread. I am a Malaysian who recently started studying in SG. I am thinking of applying for PR to live here.someday, however...

May I ask how should I live in SG with the insane cost of housing here? I have been told that I will be able to earn around $2.2k-3k as a graduate engineer, but I see that even 2-bedroom apartments have rental cost of around $2.5k . Luckily, I'm currently under scholarship and I get to rent a room with 2 other people for around $300/month. I used to think this was expensive but now that I have looked around a bit...I think I am lucky to even get a room for this cheap.

I just want to know what is the absolute cheapest possible accomodation available for a unmarried guy. I don't really need much as far as living space goes - a bed, a table, a clean toilet and some space to store my stuff are all I need. Currently I'm considering sharing an apartment with like 4 other guys to mitigate the cost of living when I start working. I don't even know how I am supposed to start a family at this rate.

@FireIce: I would continue renting my room but the landlord is currently renting it out to poly students only haha, too bad I may have to move out after 3 years. So just to clarify, most sg people never really own a house but only rent even until old?

@jurongresident: I hope so. I'm just hoping for a decent salary that I can eat well and live in a room is all >.<

"Own" will depend on your flat's 99 years leasehold status whether it is an BTO or more risky an old flat. That why the lease buyback scheme was introduced since no buyer with right mind will buy an flat and stay until a few lease year left and returned back to the 'state'.
