During the announcement of the East Coast GRC line up, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say said that the ruling party PAP has to take in more foreigners to protect Singaporeans’ jobs and because of that, there were fewer retrenchments and wages went up:

“The Government came to the conclusion that one good way to protect the Singaporean workers from (global economic volatility) was to expand the size of the work force, to go for higher growth. The foreign manpower provided some buffer to the local workforce from the fluctuation of the economy.

That strategy worked for 10 years…during which global unemployment went up and stayed high, while many industrialised nations suffered wage stagnation.

But because of our higher growth policy and more liberal intake of foreign manpower, we were able to stay away from unemployment and wage stagnation. The gain for the Singapore workforce: There were fewer retrenchments. Also, wages went up, not just in nominal but real terms.”

Minister Lim Swee Say has been hard-selling his population policies and justifying the government’s white paper proposal to raise the population to 6.9 million. The East Coast GRC anchor minister also bid farewell to former Transport Minister Raymond Lim and even wept at the press conference.

Lim Swee Say warn Singaporeans not to change the CPF

Former Manpower Minister and PAP candidate for East Coast GRC Lim Swee Say warned Singaporeans not to change the CPF system because it will not be sustainable. The PAP candidate shot down proposals from Opposition parties calling them populist and drastic.

“Whatever we do, we must bear in mind what is the purpose of CPF. In other words, we may change the ‘how’, we may change the ‘what’. But we should never forget the ‘why’.

While we discuss and debate the refinements that we (may) make to the CPF system, we must always remember that we must stay true to the purpose of CPF, and more importantly, make sure that the CPF system is sustainable.

Because it’s easy to talk about things that will be popular with the people today. Whatever changes, whatever refinements we make to the CPF system, it will have major implications for our people — not today, but 10 years from now, 20 years from now, 30 years from now.”

Currently, the CPF Withdrawal Age has been raised from 55 to 65 years old, with plans to further raising it to 67 in 2018. The CPF Minimum Sum is increased every year and has since since doubled to S$161,000 in 2015 from S$80,000 in 2003. Many Singaporean retirees are forced into the workforce because they are not able to retrieve their retirement money from the CPF as initially planned. The PAP government intends to continue increasing Minimum Sum and CPF Withdrawal Age because “people are living longer”.

Lim Swee Say also blamed Singaporeans for not “understanding” government policies which led to discontentment:

“I realised that if we can find a simple way to highlight the key concept — the main point of our policies — many people, once they understand better, they will accept the policy even better”

My question to LSS:

Can increase FTs forever ah? Singapore is so small and so overcrowded already - This is not sustainable and definitely not a long term solution for SIngapore.

Please think harder with PAP team-mates and alternative party candidates to find a better long term strategy that works, instead of taking the easy road by increasing FTs.

We pay our ministers millions of $, it's reasonable that we expect only first class solutions.

possible solution:

build hostels across the island, for the people of Malaysia, of all walks of life, to sleep in.

I notice there is a large number of the people at Malaysia who come to Singapore to work and to receive education. We should encourage more people of Malaysia to come to Singapore.

On the other hand, we should take in less people from China and India.

The thing is that since we are after all the same people, I do not think the people of Singapore would really consider the people of neighbouring countries as "Foreign".

Those who have worked before, whether part-time or full-time, admit it. We need the so-called "Foreign Talent". I ever worked at a local company before. The company is so short-handed, so much so that in one shift, sometimes only one or two is in that shift, to handle one area. Why? Because apparently there is a cap on how many "Foreign Talent" can be employed. In the end, although Singapore people have higher chance of getting a job, we locals have to do a lot more la! Do you know how tiring is it or not? :(

and since we need them, I feel that if we have hostels for them to sleep in, we should give it to them, if not just price the rental to only cover the costs of maintenance of the hostels.
