The Government recognises that Singapore cannot grow its foreigner population indefinitely and is now seeking public views as it sets out to formulate a sustainable population policy.

In a paper released on Thursday, the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) noted that the Government has to calibrate the inflow of foreigners into the workforce to “support a shift to a higher value, more productive economy”.

Several measures already put in place, including higher levies, lower Dependency Ratio Ceilings and higher income and education criteria for the foreign workforce, have been progressively tightened across all skills levels.

Some will have to be phased in over time to allow businesses to restructure and adapt.

But Singaporeans also have to consider how these changes will impact the need for economic growth, which is essentially to create jobs for them.

The document, which is available online, aims to help Singaporeans understand the choices and trade-offs the country has to make in the face of complex demographic challenges – declining birth rates, a shrinking workforce and an ageing population, for instance.

A video released as part of the paper, and which can be seen at www.population.sg, says Singapore is “facing a daunting challenge that may put at risk the Singapore story”. It warned of a vicious cycle of a declining birth rate leading to a greying population, which in turn would slow down businesses and the economy, leaving the young and able-bodied to seek greener pastures abroad.

We are "blessed" to have the "first world ministers" with their immigration policy to bring upon problems after problems. They create problems now asking the public about their feedback and acting like they "care" to want to solve problem. Disgusting, downright disgusting and unreliable kind of sickening govt.

They are not worth every cent the people in the tiny dot pay them.

Again? We pay annual income tax to fund their high salaries, and prevent corruption. And they ask us for public feedback because they can't really come up with better ideas?

The way the talent see things:

We caused the low birth rate and they input cheap labour to solve labour, business and population problems.

We should be grateful about achieving the high GDP and we should be integrating with the new citizens.

We are unable to recognise their brilliant masterplan and keep blaming them for every thing.

As for solution, since we are causing all the disharmony, why dun we solve the problem that we have caused ?

It is our problem so it is us to solve them.

They will be rewarded for bringing out the solution from us.

Dun waste your energy for solution on this, gambling in such a scale never will be good for future. Is both the ministers and gamblers problem. There is no education support gambling of this scale, and no history in school education support gambling.

the gov seems to be listening to me as i had said here n elsewhere that they need A FEEDBACK from people in order to improve things.

in the past i said to them to have no feedback from people would be like driving a car without a speedometer or fuel meter ...they will all either break the sound barrier or run out of fuel before reaching next destination.

what needs to be done by singaporeans in singapore with my hard effort of coercing spore gov to have a decent feedback is u folks to tell them to increase salary to developed world status that complements the high cost of living in spore.with that your immigration issues will be no more!

Of course there is no way any country can simply depend on immigration imports in the long run. Clearly they have to think about longer term solutions in getting the birth rates higher, as the population ages.. There is also a need for a re-think in the manner in which we attach values to different jobs people do. As the world develops, every country will strive to give their own people better lives. There is no guarantee that there will always be cheap labour for us to tap on. Given limited land and other resources ,we have done excellently thus far. The challenges in the the future will be tough. Can we lease Johore for 80 years?

i wrote before, they only spend on things that can rake in revenue. the report have to look good. never thinklong run. the money to build those gambling dens if put to action on solving our limitae land space and resources will even be better.

we solved the water problem, we can solve our land and natural resources problem. reclam land - more land means cheaper land latter, build up our industrial sector again because china is already at their limit, their own provinces are challenging against their own to be cheaper - and faster -not better so now is the time to start early and by later on we will be back on track.
