The Singapore
Hua Yuan Association on Tuesday opened up nominations for its
second “New Immigrant Outstanding Contribution Awards” to
immigrants from beyond the Chinese community.
The move aims
to give recognition to new Singaporean citizens or permanent
residents who have contributed to Singapore.
The association
hopes to select candidates who have contributed in areas including
the arts, science and technology, commerce and education.
It is not known
why new immigrants have to be specially singled out for receiving
such awards for their contributions to Singapore. Shouldn’t new
Singaporean citizens be treated the same as any other Singaporean
citizens?
It is also not
known why permanent residents, who are essentially foreigners not
prepared to sink permanent roots in Singapore by becoming citizens,
are specially singled out for receiving the “New Immigrant
Outstanding Contribution Awards” too. The strong S$ which they are
earning in Singapore should be sufficient “awards” already for
their “contributions” to Singapore.
