FAST-FOOD restaurants in Singapore use large quantities of
disposable cutlery, cups and lids as well as a variety of
containers every day.
As it is not mandatory to separate the general trash from
recyclable trash, recyclable items will inevitably end up with the
general trash.
In Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, I have seen recycling bins in
fast-food restaurants.
When customers return their trays, they can pour any leftover
ice and drinks into a metallic container, before throwing the cups,
lids and straws into the recycling bin.
There is also a separate container for unused napkins and sauce
packets.
The general trash goes into a bin below.
The fast-food restaurant chains here should consider similar
trash collection methods.
Considering the huge amounts of recyclable trash they generate,
the chains should contribute to the green effort in Singapore.
