SINGAPORE: Former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has
called for the understanding of Singaporeans towards the
government's decision to continue taking in immigrants.
Speaking at a Lunar New Year gathering in his constituency of
Tanjong Pagar, Mr Lee said Singapore's per capita income is one of
the highest in Asia.
But it faces an ageing and shrinking population. Last year, the
birth rate was 1.15, with the Chinese leading the decline among
other races.
Mr Lee said Japan also suffers from similar problems. But its
decision not to take in migrants has contributed to economic
stagnation.
He said: "Our choice must be the other one, taking in immigrants. I
know Singaporeans do not feel very comfortable seeing so many
strange new faces, but the alternative is economy stagnation and
worse, nobody to look after our old people later on."

whose really against taking in immigrants? what we want is to
constantly enquire, and review and if have to let a neutral party
audot on the procedures and operations on the ground, how the
people really execute work and maintain in terms of immigrants
accptance based on their quality. the rules and regulations of just
letting them have the previlege if they have worked for say 5 years
and for people like the mainland chinese to exploit just bring in
their whole family of ah gong ah mas really is not appreciated by
sgreans, me included.
and don;t comapre with japan lah, loo at our own dicks and
breasts and and work on them lah. the main reason why they claim
japan stagnant is because they have a very high standard of living,
eveything cost svery high. so if we sg wnat to comapre we are
really near there. look at US and other countries that let
immigrants in - same also, our economy getting any better?
as long as we allow businesses to trifle on greed alone, the
rich will be richer while the poor will forever stay poor, worse
struggling with rising costs of living.
the solution to low birth rate is not bring in foreign labor or
more immigrants. these will only dilute our sg image and culture
further. its only a quick solution to a man with vision als half
leg in the coffin already. with such influs of foreign league
within a few short years, i really have doubt if my offsprings will
have any future in sg anymore, and i for the first time wonder the
NS i served, for who really? if not my fellow sgreans and their
families.
