SINGAPORE: It's less than a fortnight to the Lunar New Year and many foreign workers have started heading home for the festive season.

Manpower shortage in the foreign worker-reliant cleaning industry has left one hawker centre literally in a mess.

Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre greeted patrons on Tuesday with dirty tables littered with used plates and utensils.

Hawkers said the problem started when their previous cleaning contractor terminated its service abruptly on 30 December 2011.

Anticipating a big crowd during the Lunar New Year holidays, some hawkers decided to fork out their own money to hire temporary cleaners.

Others switch to using disposable utensils.

According to the Chinatown Business Association, a new cleaning contractor was roped in on January 6, at a 40 per cent hike in their monthly fees compared to their previous one.

But the situation has not improved.

Hawkers said the cleaners are still settling into their new working environment.

And they fear the situation might get worse.

The culprit is disposal utensils. No one to clear them up.

No cleaners, the individual stall holders should be made responsible to collect their own plates and cutlery back.

Actually I can see the meaning behind this. Nowadays alot of singaporean is complaining abt the FT – mainly the PMET groups, thus first the elites control the numbers FW, then get the media to report this. Thus by doing so, they can blur the line btw FT and FW (which is ok with most singaporean). Not long late, they will have the full support and reason to back them up to open the floodgate again. So simple, anyway singaporean very easy to con lar.

rubbish..

if everyone just cleaned up after themselves, there will not be a mess..

what is so hard about bringing the goddamned tray to the disposal area where someone will take the tray from you and clean it up after you eat?

If the pay is $5000 a month for cleaners, will there be a shortage?

the root cause is conjestion and a high influx of people thinking spore can make easy money and a place to hook any human being that hass a dick and is single - at a rate too fast. so they create more trashes, more shit - and i can tell you the toilets are insufficient so they begin to shit anywhere

5000 ruppess an hour maybe
