FOR the past 20 years, Mr Ng Boo Leng, 48, owner of Dragon Prawn
Noodle, has been selling his signature prawn noodles at $2 a
bowl.
Despite rising inflation, he has no plans to increase his
prices.
On Saturday morning, he received a personal 'thank you' from
Aljunied GRC MP Cynthia Phua, who went around to his stall and 45
others at the Hainanese Village Centre, a market and food centre on
Hougang Avenue 1. She was there to thank them for their voluntary
pledge to keep their food prices constant till Dec 31 this
year.
Said Mr Ng in Mandarin: 'I've been selling prawn noodles for so
long, so I have many regular customers. I had to reduce the number
of prawns in my noodles, but my customers know that I still promise
quality.'
Hawkers have blamed the rising cost of ingredients and fuel for
them increasing their prices, while patrons have complained about
having to cope with inflation too.
Said Madam Phua: 'The stallholders really don't need to, but for
them to make this commitment, I'm really very happy, because the
residents will benefit. I believe this is where, in the community
itself, it shows that everyone plays a part.'
