I APPLAUD the move by the Government to put would-be citizens
through the mandatory orientation programme, the Singapore
Citizenship Journey ("New citizens, you need to..."; last
Saturday).
In fact, aspiring citizens should read up more on our
Singaporean culture, our diverse ethnic groups and the many rules
and laws surrounding our day-to-day living.
Three bad habits that foreigners should be educated to avoid are
spitting, cycling on pavements and smoking at bus stops.
I urge the authorities who conduct the programme to highlight
these three nuisances to the candidates. The penalties should be
highlighted as well.
All new citizens should also be given a probationary period of
one year, whereby their citizenship status could be revoked should
they commit serious crimes.
Raymund Koh
I urge the authorities who conduct the programme to send the
foreigners back.
