I AM deeply concerned about the state of cleanliness in my HDB
housing estate, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Aljunied
Town Council.
Despite the rise in service and conservancy charges this year,
there has been no noticeable improvement in the general cleanliness
of common areas such as void decks.
Encountering pests such as cockroaches and rats is not uncommon.
The extent of infestation is most evident after thermal fogging,
which is performed once in a long while and always leaves the void
decks littered with dead cockroaches.
Most recently, the void deck of a particular block was scrubbed
thoroughly over the weekend in anticipation of a visit by Member of
Parliament Cynthia Phua. Otherwise, cleaning is an annual
ritual.
Clearly, the estate cannot be thoroughly cleaned only once a
year. There is a need to maintain clean and hygienic living
conditions at all times. Merely discouraging littering does not
completely alleviate the problem as dirt would still
accumulate.
I urge the relevant authorities to step up efforts to upkeep the
estate.
