I REFER to last Thursday's letter ("Timely reminder on treating
maids right"). Singaporeans need to do some soul searching on how
they treat their maids.
It is very tough for maids to leave their homes and families for
a foreign land, where they have to not only adapt to a new
environment but also learn new skills quickly.
As Singaporeans, we enjoy a high standard of living in a
first-class nation. Let us not, in the pursuit of success and
material wealth, forget to treat our maids like fellow human
beings.
Treat them fairly and with respect. Provide them with fair
working conditions. They are here to assist us in caring for our
family and household - not to be our slaves.
