SINGAPORE : More beggars are being picked up on the
streets of Singapore, largely because of increased public awareness
and stepped-up surveillance, said Community Development Minister
Vivian Balakrishnan.
He said the number is 60 so far this year, and close to half of
them are foreigners.
The average number of beggars picked up each year, over the past
three years, has been 85.
Dr Balakrishnan noted that Singaporeans who need help do not have
to beg.
They can turn to various sources of aid including Community
Development Councils, Family Service Centres and voluntary welfare
groups.
The minister was giving a written answer to Nominated MP Laurence
