OVER-ENTHUSIASTIC tourists are damaging the tiles at the base of
the Merlion and putting themselves in danger - just to get that
postcard-perfect photo.
They trample on the 'waves' at the base of the Merlion, causing
damage to the tiles. Imagine someone getting a deep cut because of
the broken tiles, or worse, a child slipping and falling into the
Singapore River.
The Singapore Tourism Board or the authorities concerned should
do something before someone gets hurt or more damage is done to the
Merlion.
Those cheap plastic chains surrounding the Merlion obviously do
nothing to deter people from climbing over. Perhaps the next time
the Merlion has a facelift - I hope before the Youth Olympic Games
in August - a planter bed of bougainvillea (prickly but pretty)
could be placed around the base to protect the landmark from the
mob of tourists thronging the park every day.
