I don't know about the tradition, but being an overseas student
in Melbourne, I have come to a a conclusion, though not the best
answer, that the way we speak identifies us. More specifically,
it's the commonly known "Singlish".
Asian students from HK, Indonesia, Vietnam...etc all know that we
are from Singapore just by listening to the way we talk. Even the
Aussies know that too, I was talking to another Singaporean friend
on a cab, and when we got off, the Oz cab driver asked us whether
we are from Singapore. I was shocked. We were basically talking in
Singlish....with the authentic "rojak" flavor inside.
The Singapore government may not be too please about Singlish, but
it certainly bring the "tinydot" out of us!
