Police arrest boys who drove 300m; they face probe for possible
vehicle theft

IN A dangerous game which could well have ended in tragedy, two
11-year-old boys took a lorry for a joyride on Wednesday.
No one was hurt, but the primary school pupils are being
investigated for possible vehicle theft, a police spokesman
said.
Witnesses said the lorry was left unattended at the side of Bedok
South Avenue 2 near Bedok Green Primary School.
The driver had left the key in the ignition and the doors unlocked,
reported Shin Min Daily News.
The boys, in school uniform, were walking by when they decided to
hop into the truck.
They started the engine and took the lorry for a spin, driving
about 300m from Bedok South Avenue 2 to New Upper Changi Road, past
the Bedok Community Centre.
Passers-by shouted to the underage drivers to stop, and called the
police.
The lorry finally came to a halt near a bus stop in New Upper
Changi Road.
The two boys were then detained by members of the public until the
police arrived and arrested them.
They are now out on bail.
Police said investigations are in progress.
In Singapore, anyone below 18 years old is not allowed to drive on
the road.
In 1996, there were three fatal accidents involving drivers who did
not have driver's licences, resulting in four deaths.
And in 2005, 791 people were caught for driving without licences,
although the figures were not broken down into age groups.
