SINGAPORE: A new two—rating classification system for video
games will be launched end of the month, the Board of Film Censors
(BFC) under the Media Development Authority (MDA) announced on
Monday.
The new video games ratings are "Mature 18 (M18)" for games that
are suitable for those who are 18 and above, and "Age Advisory" for
games that are appropriate for persons who are 16 and above.
With effect from 28 April, retailers will need to conduct age
checks at the point of sale for games that are labelled M18, a
restricted category.
Games with content which contains moderate level of violence,
portrayal of implied sexual activity, nudity without details,
coarse language and depiction of illegal drug use may be required
to carry an Age Advisory label.
MDA said retailers should exercise responsibility by not selling
Age Advisory—labelled games to those below 16.
Games that do not fall into the two categories but are approved
for general consumption are not required to carry any rating
stickers. — CNA/ac
