SINGAPORE: It appeared that more people tied the knot on 29
February.
At the Registry of Marriages, some 71 marriages were registered,
compared to the daily average of 60.
In the previous leap year which was in 2004, just 15 couples
registered on 29 February and this has increased by almost five
times in 2008.
For bride and bridegroom, Jean Lee and Andy Chee, their wedding
on 29 February comes after five months of planning.
Jean said that this day is in fact not an auspicious day on the
Chinese calendar but it was unique enough for her, to convince Andy
to get married.
Andy said: "I thought she was joking, but apparently she was
not, because most people will go for double dates like 070707 or
even 080808 or even the first day that we met. But I think February
29 is quite a special day."
"Maybe for the next few years it might be a dinner, just a
dinner for the both of us. But when it comes to our first’
anniversary four years later, it will be a much bigger one," said
Jean. —CNA/vm
