For those whose chinese sucks, like me. Here's a rough summary
of what the lyrics are about.
I guess the story went something
like this:
There was a misunderstanding between the guy and the girl which
arised cos of some rumours started by people. The future between
them was already bleak, thus their relationship couldn't withstand
any rumours. (Perhaps the love between them was a forbidden love,
as their social status is very far apart, based on this sentence:
Chen mo nian dai / huo xu bu gai / tai yao yuan de xiang ai.
However, this sentence could also mean that in that period where
there's a lack of communication devices, it would be difficult to
maintain a long-distance relationship. Chen mo nian dai could also
possibly mean that in those olden days, people tend to keep their
feelings to themselves)
So, the girl left. After she left, there was no news of her
anymore. (ni wu sheng hei bai can be interpreted in a variety of
ways, one of it is that she did not write him any letters and thus
there was no news of her)
Years passed, even when he was already old, he would still stand at
a highground, wait for swallows to return (year after year, seasons
after seasons)..and hoping that the girl would return. The girl
probably promised before that she would return in the season when
the flowers bloom, but she didn't.
And he kept on waiting and waiting. He would be lured into the
forest by sounds he thought was music played by the girl (or
weeping sounds of the girl). So he would rush into the forest to
look for the girl, but what was left there was only moss.
He would sometimes stand in the rain to relive the memories of the
girl coming to him and telling him all her sorrows and grief even
up till now (Ni chong yu zhong lai / shi hua le bei ai / wo ling
shi xian zai ).
He would sometimes dream of the girl, and when he awakes from his
dreams, he would see no one by the window, thus his dreams
shattered and the end of the story in his dreams was exposed - the
girl still has not returned.
The girl was innocent (using pure white body as a metaphor) and
that the love the girl had for the guy was untainted. The dusts was
actually the "rumours" started by all those people, and beneath
those dusts was a transparent, pure body. (Yi shen liu li bai / tou
ming zhe chen ai / ni wu xia de ai)
The guy probably realised his mistakes and that he had
misunderstood the girl, so he kept on waiting and waiting for the
girl to come back and forgive him (cos he was the one who sent her
away in the first place). But she never did come back.
Or perhaps he knew right from the start that she was innocent,
after she told him about her sorrows in the rain. But he had no
choice but to send her away cos the controversy was so great. And
he thought she would be back as she promised when everything cooled
down. But she didn't.
