Switching from IT to business

klaha81 SG

I have a dip in IT from TP. However, i am getting sick of IT, also heard of the low pay and long working hours.

After my NS, i am considering switching to study a DL Business Degree at SIM.

Is It advisable? If i step into the working world..can i get a job somewhat in between business and IT? something like business IT job-related?

IT not that bad arh...

if Business and IT..then it'll be like an account sales manager lor...u sell IT solutions to companies and yadayada

but then..really got to know what people want so starting low first is the best...handle and troubleshoot systems...then after that u wanna go on to the business aspect is good...

i wont say IT is low pay and long hours....i work 9-5 sia

got alot of tracks..

networking

1st level support...

2nd level support...

programming..

designing

my advice to u is try doing first level support for a year....u'll then know what track u want in IT

i did first level support (i think its first level) during internship. how does that help? Question Neutral

can learn the business and how procurements are settled....

needs of users...

and get your professional networking up

u get to see how IT works in a business.....

u learn softskills and technical skills

thats wat i look forward in my job currently...contact with humans... as soon as i complete my CCNA..then i'm off to the networking track

i'm not talking about 1st level support as in IBM and Dell repairmen

talking abt first level support of organisations such as schools, govt bodies and MNCs...

u need to be on the ground first to understand the gears and cogs of IT before actually going into IT

i've met so many solutions providers who are fresh out of uni offering stuff that I have no use of and most of the time they dunno wat they are selling with relations to organisational needs....and the way they sell is ala MLM style which sickens me...

Since you picked IT as the field for your diploma studies, surely there must be some interest that propelled you to do so?

What I recommend you to do is to take that interest and work in an IT related field after you graduate from TP with an IT diploma. It could be an attachment or a part-time IT field, it does not matter. Just get a feel of the industry, job scope and see whether it tallys with your interest and don't let some rumors or comments from your peers dictate what you really want to do with your life.

It is easy to go from IT to Business.
But not the other way round.

Business is very general lor. U get engineering degree also can go into business sector. IT can also cross over to business easily.

In fact, everything other degree can cross into business easily. But it's a NO-NO for business degree to work engineering, IT cos it is not specialised mah.

Some of the bank hire engineering graduates to for their business posts cos their engineer technical background serves as a very good foundation for critical problem solving.

IT + bizness.. not bad a combi.. or at least from what i heard lah..

I myself contemplating to try such combi..

Rockhound SG

hardware wise...cannot make u money one...

think of applications....

database....

a way to manage data....

how to support this system..

then make it expandable

then u market it....

sure can make good money one....

the only good thing about hardware is that...after a few years...ure old customers sure buy from u again....that is if u give them good deals...

u need to know the trend of IT now..

now more into web apps/management arh..

BrUtUs SG

yes.. go ahead n take biz... moreever u now is ns so best to time to change track...

Yes you can. It depends on your luck if you can get it. it is more challengint to be in the management position in the IT.

IT is a very big field.

Basically, if you can't think of how your IT services will benefit your client by increasing their value, you won't be earning a lot.
