Talking about this, you remind me of my FYP facilitator. He’s from Australia, and the first thing he asks is always: “Are you speaking English?”. We have no problems with email or IM communications, but when face-to-face, the problems arise.

I don't think Singaporeans have problems speaking English well.
It's only a matter of wanting to speak English or Singlish.

Come to think about it, most Singaporeans can switch smoothly between proper English and Singlish.

This is my overseas experience. When speaking with Singaporeans, we will automatically speak in a mixture of Singlish and Mandarin (for Fellow chinese Singaporeans)

Yet when we speak with foreigners, our English or Mandarin will become more "perfect". We have the ability to do so, but sometimes, we feel more comfortable and homely speaking in our "home" language.
