Note that there is something different between the Rape of
Nanking and Sook Ching.
The former was meant as a kind of pillage, the latter is
purification. The objectives are different.
The latter was supposedly conducted in secret, away from civilian
eyes. Or else they could just execute you along the street, no need
to even bring you to ulu places to be shot.
