divinewind88 SG

Go to Tokyo University? Honto? Can you speak japanese first?

Aerospace engineering , if you look at who manufactures most of the airplanes, it is either the americans or the french and sometimes the germans ( germans are rock solid in engineering) . Try USA first ,or france if you can speak french. And boeing uses roll royce jet motors - that is UK.

Tokyo university ...aerospace hahaha. Ai yo ....japanese also have problems getting into the top university . The Koreans are overtaking the japanese in technology now. Try South Korean Universities.

You want prestige ? Try Caltech or MIT. Cannot even get in? Forget about Tokyo University.

TheGoodEarth SG

Frankly speaking, there is no difference or advantage. It is all up to an individual to learn. If you are keen to learn, you don't need to go to university.
Knowledge is everywhere. But if you want to be taught, then go. If you want a piece of paper, then go buy one.

Seth35 SG

Whats the aggregate needed to go into a foreign uni from poly ?

Ashearo SG

If you can get into a local university (NTU SMU NUS) then you should do your degree here first, then do well enough in it, get a good honours, then it will be easier for you to get a scholarship to do your masters overseas. It does not mean that overseas unis are better. A lot of ppl who cant make it to local unis will go to aus. I read a story bout how someone got into LSE when even NTU rejected him/her.

BTW MIT took in one singaporean JC Student only, for this year (my friend's girlfriend is studying there so she knows) And my friend tried to apply to MIT. His A level grades - 4As, 3 S paper distinctions, GP A1. and he is national champion for maths olympiad last year. His portfolio is full of other CCAs, leadership etc.

Yet he couldnt get in. Thats just about how tough it gets.

Wega007 SG

if you can speak Jap or willing to spend 1 yr doing Jap in Japan go ahead.
Tokyo Uni fees isn't that high compare to Oz Uni but living standard will be higher than Melbourne or Sydney.

if you plan on working in Jap company, Tokyo is definitely better than NTU. Why?
Jap support their Uni. You can get promote just because U grad from Tokyo uni.

2/3 of the 1st tier American Uni are hard for Poly students.
Uk Universities might be more willing to take Poly students.

Australian uni take Poly students left and right. ppl with 3.2+ GPA can make it to UofMelb Bschool, or 2.8 can get into ANU.
Canadian uni are hard on Poly students. GPA of 3.5 might get you in UBC, 3.3 definitely not! friend got rejected this yr!

if U decide do College from yr 1 in an American system, it will be easier to transfer to Uni like USC or UBC.

Fatum SG

yeah, US unis are tough ... but that's not to say it can't be done ...

I know of at least one girl from SP who got into harvard ...

Fatum SG

oh yeah ... even if you're set on going overseas, unless you're heading to oxbridge or ivy league types, get yourself an offer from NUS/NTU first ....

it's good for shutting up the aunty brigades who're wont to say you CMI that's why you head overseas ...

trust me, I know ... Laughing

Darkness_hacker99 SG

Shoot back saying that you're going to pursue your prestigious degree from a University better than NUS. Laughing

Fatum SG

the average singaporean aunty will only know the following universities

1. NUS/NTU/SMU
2. the oxbridges, some of the more high profile ivy leaguers, e.g. harvard
3. if she has a son/daughter overseas, which ever one he/she is studying in

other than the above, anything else is CMI ....

Laughing

divinewind88 SG

hey thanks for your opinions. it helped me to some extent!

fymk SG

Aerospace engineering Caltech or MIT might be better. Not Harvard - Harvard is more for any other subject than engineering or physics.

fymk SG

Who gives a damn about aunty brigades. I also kenna the CMI thing before. Then I just tell them that my best qualification is not my degree but my permanent residency. They just shut up.

BillGates SG

How about University of Wollongong, Australia?

Are Local uni better?

Master -_- SG

try getting into Browns if there's a chance to go to an Ivy League Cool

fymk SG

UoW is not even in Group 8 but it has its own strength .

Are local unis better? I don't know. I don't see much achievements they made internationally. NUS is ranked below ANU and University of Melbourne. So really? Harder to get in yes but better .....not sure.

One thing to say - a basic degree is not worth much salt really . Yes going to oxbridge or ivy leagues are great for opening doors in your career but in certain skilled industries , they don't care which university you are from . They only want to know if you have the potential to think of new ideas or improvements for them and contribute to their organisation aka research potential if you are talking about aerospace. Someone I know did engineering in UWA and he is now working in the aerospace industry designing engines and parts .

If you want people to go OH WOW ...do your postgraduate in an oxbridge or ivy league . It will overwrite your basic degree.
