University Rankings

I guess rankings are not the most important factor for choosing where to study, but I need some ways to gauge my preferences.

Which rankings are more reliable? Or is that even the right word to use. It appears that webometrics uses web presence, etc. How would you guys interpret these rankings usefully?

ranking is how other view those Uni.. usually at Postgrad or research levels.

Singaporeans we eyes grow on our head looking up the sky.. haha
only know harvard, Stanford, UCLA, yale or Oxford etc as good..
those seen good by the rankings might be ulu to our little country!

With the amount of advertisement and promotion on Oz Uni.
even certain UK Uni like bath might seem not a good as certain Oz uni.
I must admit more ppl would have heard of RMIT than Bath.
ppl might say "what? bath? go take shower lah.."

it is hard to compare across the board which Uni is better.
coming back to SG? worth it to try uni that few heard of? or just follow the crowd or be different. ppl at Sauder bschool doing bschool even worried their degree not as good as Oz ones like RMIT. cannot get into big accounting company!!!

" I graduated from Boise Polytechnic University in Idaho USA" ...

"Sorry, is that a Polytechnic or a University ? "

"In the US, all Polytechnics are Universities " ....

"Idaho ? ... isn't that where they grow potatoes ? " ....

"I'm sorry ... I'm sure that it's quite famous in Idwyld, sorry, Idaho .... but this is Singapore " ........

how true it is isn't it ? ....

but I guess the ironic thing is that they are quite willing to hire ang mohs on expat terms with papers from sungei road universities, quite willing to hire banglas and ah tiongs on peanuts (the small ones, not Durai's) with papers also from sungei road universities, but they are unwilling to hire Singaporeans with papers from universities they doesn't recognize on first sight ....

haha, no need to go so extreme to name Boise Polytechnic University. Even in USA few heard of this Uni!
however, its the sad truth about singapore. All concern with rankings but our eyes see what we wanna see. UBC also not sungei Road uni also fear liao, Boise Polytechnic University no need to say loh..
