Will Singapore watch an animated sitcom?

iskander SG

Hi everyone,

I'm Iskander and I make cartoons and animation. In 2000 I saw a show called South Park and thought, "I want to do animation like that!"
So, I made some very rough samples, without sound effects and/or without music.

I went around town to pitch the idea of an animated sitcom, and the industry feedback was:

"Singaporeans think animation is for kids. They'll not watch an animated sitcom for adults, especially one that looks like South Park."

I started this thread for a practical purpose. I can't convince the network to make this show just by telling them Singaporeans want to see it. Singaporeans will have to tell them directly.

South Park ROX!!!

I have seen every episode of it and other than the humour, the critical views present in the cartoon is very insightful too.

But you can dream on, because a show like that simply would be banned in Singapore. (South Park suffered that fate)

allentyb SG

the canadian created south park to poke fun at the american and it is banned in singapore, because it is deem as too violence and i watch before the whole season 9, if you want to create an animated sitcom, it had better to be original, otherwise, i rather watch south park or simpsons,

to the last time, i ever watch a animated movie which is produced by singaporean, i think the movie name was zodiac and it is a totally flop and i regret watching it.......

so do i want to see an animated sitcom, yes i would like to.

Fast replies, thanks!

It wouldn't be South Park, of course, but along those lines. Like Family Guy is similar to The Simpsons, but The Simpsons is much less offensive.

Would you email the network the letter of support?

chenc SG

Afraid a cartoon that satisfies the above conditions will have little left to laugh about. Maybe lame kind of funny (P.C.K style), but never Family Guy or South Park kind of humour.

iskander SG

Thanks for your feedback.

There's a lot you can get away with in animation. Homer Simpson is an irresponsible, abusive and violent alcoholic. Yet a very lovable character. Moses Lim or Gurmit Singh can't come home drunk and kick the dog, but an local animated character might.

I think it's worth a try.

Mine doesnt load but it seems pretty cool to me … ^^ great job

iskander SG

You mean the animation page? It takes a while if traffic is heavy, I think. Thanks for the compliment. If you like it, send the email to get it on air

How you make your animations?

Software or tedious construction paper?

Please do not use this platform as a way to promote and advertise your URL...

Once is ok... but 3 times is kinda irking...

dbowie SG

before you say something, you should go google about it,trey and matt are both Americans and it's used to poke fun of canadians by making them look as if they have a head of rubbish can

iskander SG

Flash. If it were construction paper I'd probably manage about ten minutes a year.

iskander SG

Are you official police or self-appointed? Is that how you get so many posts?

Do you have anything to say about the topic in this thread, because your post is kinda irking.

Would you provide download links? Laughing

hmm here are my comments.. the alligator one is too "gory" for singapore censors. it will never be approved. try doing one without any parts of the body getting chopped or amputated or lost. the alligator one just reminds me of happytreefriends - which will definitely not pass for singapore.

the 2nd one is.. er.. not funny.. sorry.

the 3rd one cant load..

quality: nt v good but since u said rough samples i'll just close an eye.. at its present state it looks like a school project.. sorry..

yea. and er.. try selling it to cable?

iskander SG

Not sure what you mean. Question

iskander SG

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. I appreciate you taking the time to view and write your comments.

It will be interesting to see what will get by the censors if an animated sitcom gets made.

As to funny, that's always tough. Different things appeal to different people.

I've just uploaded

What's On?

This animation was part of the official selection of the Singapore Short Film Festival.

My god…you have the humour of a six year old. I think I speak for most adults when I say that we fail to find someone falling over or getting called ‘stupid’ funny.
