S40:
Exterior: looks a odd initially, like a truncated version of S60
(its a Ford Focums/Mazda 3 platform, dimensions similiar). But
looks grow on you.
Interior: the rear's a little cramped, leg and headroom-wise. But
the materials are quite decent (fascia's a little rough tho,
compared to luxury makes). But well equipped and ergonomics is
good. I like the floating console, classy. Seats worth mentioning:
superb for long dist driving, little driver fatigue with good
support. Pretty refined, except for wind noise from side
mirrors.
Engine: 2.4l NA (my dad's car) or 2.5l turbo (test drove too).
Pretty strong mid range torque. Off beat 5 cylinder warble
interesting. Needs a little determination to rev up, but once up
and steaming you can bully a 320i out of your way (show-off
deserved it). For city driving, 2.4l is sufficient.
Handling: body movement well controlled. Predisposed to understeer
thanks to hefty nose. But otherwise quite pleasing to drive (Focus'
heavier sister). Not as deft as a BMW, but steady enough in
corners, throttle controllable. Ride a little jarring over rough
roads (esp lowered T5) but acceptable. Brake pedal spongy, modulate
with care or scrub off too much speed (coz the brakes bite fiercely
when stomped on).
Overall: a good car for an affordable price. If you're not looking
for too much space and drive longer distances, a great cruiser. But
for more fun with less money, the Focus is good.
