All I know is Cantonese sounds good and it is easier to learn than other dialects like hokkien, and so on.

lots of rote learned words and tones
things say before will forget (therefore i like forums so u can dig out things said before)
obvious things also dunno (the other day i asked for the orange coloured thing to tie up my xiaobai when i bring her go gaigai, then my mother say "what orange thing?" like DUH WHAT OTHER ORANGE THING CAN THERE BE that is related to my dog. then i gave her a few more chances by prompting her more and waiting a few more seconds and she still couldnt think of it. now i cant be faulted for treating her like an idiot)

Pardon me, if you can't remember the thingy and only know it is orange in color, do you expect her to remember for you .. I mean there are so many things in orange .. .. if you remember, a gentle reminder may help instead of prompting ... I am not saying you don't know how to prompt, but there are people who really don't know how to prompt and often prompt the wrong thing .. back to the idiot thingy, how does that qualify your mother as idiot ?

ya now i like cantonese best after hearing that girl talk in cantonese i think they must be from hongkong cos all 4 of them spoke so fluently in canto and they were all youngsters

I thought this is quite normal... somehow you don't sound normal ... ok .. seriously, I think you are bias against your mother or you could have hated her for some other thing.. therefore anything she do now is irritating or like you put it, sound idiotic .. you have to dig into your memory bank to search for your answer .. I agree with dumbdumb. .. cantonese sound much better than all other dialects .. I like to listen to cantonese song ... but I hate it when they start cursing ... I think they can be very vicious ..

I live with my mother for the past 48 years ... there are many things I don't about my mum doing, like lying to me about my children etc .. I hated it when people lied to me .. but I don't call her idiot... I still hold her although nowsaday I seldom talk to her .. but I still promised myself to change and try to talk to her again as before .. I want to do it before she leaves us... she is 80 years old now ... or else I will regret for the rest of my life
