for auto cars, put to D or N mode?

is there any difference? fuel savings?

which 1 is better?

drove my father altis.. put to neutral the tacho needle lower by 1 marking.. then after a while it goes back up.. unexpainable phenomena.. mabye save a bit fuel...

but what i do know is do not shift to neutral while braking to complete stop at traffic light... something to do with no engine brake...

Used to shift to N gear while stopping at traffic lights on my old car for 5 years already. So far my auto gear box did not fail me. Till the day I scraped my old car, it also did not fail me.

But now, I'm driving a new car. Have since changed my bad habits after consulting experts from another car forum. Be safe than sorry.

Initially, still got the habits of changing to N gear but after a while, get used to it.

May be experts here can shed some lights on this.

Logically speaking, D gear should save a bit of fuel as RPM is slightly lower than N gear.

just keep it at D, unless you know you're gonna be stationary for quite sometime.

the fuel savings (if there ever were) would prove insignificant to the cost of replacing an auto box.

here's ur explanation as quoted by a website :

It is not advisable to shift to N while on the move as this may damage the internal parts of the device. When engaged at N, deceleration will allow the output shaft to overrun the hydraulic clutches and the gear trains of the gearbox. All hydraulic clutches at this gear will be at a disengaged position. The driving and driven plates will be separated slightly as they rub against one another, causing premature wear and tear. At D position, the governor or speeds sensor in the Electronic Control Transmission is still in operation. There will then be an automatic downshift, also known as coast downshift, to give better control of the vehicle and engine braking

i normally engage to N. guess save a bit more gas? cause when engaging to N the engine sounds more relax for my case. Cool

I also dun know. Ask driving instructor when i want to buy auto car last time. He told me its ok to put at P.

leaving at D has no effect on the brake pads at all. you're just braking to keep the car still. no motion, no friction, how would the pads wear off?

When you release the brakes the car still moves right? You are literally preventing the car from moving and there is friction.

Fuel savings are negligible. However, u will expose ur AT gearbox to wear & tear on a higher tendency compared to those who just step on the brakes and leave the gear at Drive mode. As mentioned earlier, its cheaper to stay at Drive mode than to replace the gearbox.

But if u know u are going to be stuck there for a long time, then maybe u might wanna consider changing to Neutral mode. Wink

Been changing to N for past 5 years on my old civic.

So far no problem to my auto gear box leh.

May be it started to breakdown after 5 years? Can't observed that now cos it had already been scraped.

when i collect my car last yr dec… the SE told me that is not advisable to put to N when stopping at traffic lights… but tried that sometimes… my car still no problem… =)
