Disengaging gear to neutral on a Manual

Is it really neccessary to depress the clutch? I’ve tried disengaging to neutral without depressing the clutch and nothing happens, no sound no resistance.

physically the gear lever appears to be N position but in fact the gear train within is still engage.

not true wad....My 7-tonner can just push 2 neutral w/o pressing clutch....but heck its a truck and with a peumatic Gearbox but for cars i dunno and i dun plan 2 try.... Laughing

No leh, if engine still engaged then the car will move. But for my case neutral is neutral, car not moving although clutch release.

The answer to this is simple. If you change gear w/o stepping on the clutch, you are "forcing" the transmission shaft to change gear. Either u will hear a horrible sound from your gear box or your car will simply stall.

Therefore, if you change to neutral w/o stepping on the clutch, your transmission shaft will be disconnected from the gears as usual. You wont hear any sound also since you're not forcing a gear change. However, you are still forcing the disengagment of gears. This is bad for the gear box.

err.. not really damaging yr tx, cause u r disengaging it, not engaging it. u r just unmeshing e gears.

its a fact u change either to gear or neutral without engaging the clutch will spoil the gearbox.. it will juz giv a horrible crack sound.. and yr gear will break easily.. for those hu dun believe.. u all can just try.. be sure yr car's gear box will break and yr pocket will be burnt a big hole Laughing

i tried before on my mitsubishi van, nothing happens no crack sound, no bang sound, just like u normal cluth in and push to neutral. and if u wanna try u can do it when u are in high gear, gear 5 dont push so fast. use a bit of force it will slowly drop drop drop and then drop to middle that is neutral gear.

The normal thing to do is to come to a complete halt then shift the gear to neutral. But I have been driving for 4 years and I always shift the gear to neutral without clutching in when I am near to the red lights and then uses the brake to let the car goes to a halt. If what some says is true by right I should have change my gear box quite often.

Geez… How come nobody mention synchronisers? Even if you engage gear without clutching in, the most you’ll damage are the synchronisers first, NOT the gears.

the synchros and the dog teeth on the gear selector.. the sound u heard is the dog teeth not meshing properly... u do not damage the gears cos they are in constant mesh with each other......

i think those don’t even dare try to push neutral without cluthing in one should not post any comments that u heard from who and who. We are the one that tried it experience it with real vehicle we just share with u all wat we encounter. And if u didn’t do it and we have done it u should hear from our comments.
