How do you catch a car scratcher?

Our car just got scratched yesterday. Does anyone have any ideas how to catch these people?

Besides parking it overnight, and staying up all night watching your car, there's the costly way of setting up a CCTV that starts recording when there are movements around your car.

You can ask the police to help you with that. My mum's car got scratched 10 years ago and then she ask the police for help. Caught the guy within 3 days

I never knew that the Police would be bothered to do this sort of small time thing!

But seriously, nothing beats a proximity alarm system that plays a recorded message: "Warning, too close! Onboard micro video recorder activated! You're now under surveilance camera! Owner shall be paged if you do not distance yourself! Alarm going off in 5-4-3-2-.."

There was a car parked along street outside of our parent's place (a semi-d). We parked behind him and our car was halfway along side walk halfway infront of parent's home gate. He must have thought we were too close behind him.

Anyway I made a police report online. An email came back saying they received the report and had someone assigned to it. I'm sceptical the cops will do anything about it as well.. but no harm trying. We'll see what happens.

Actually scratching paintwork may seem small and inconsequential, but if it's a new one I'd imagine the value of the car'll dropped quite a large amount so perhaps authorities should consider it in this light.

Our car's very old so not so painful.. just don't like the idea of this happening to our new car when we eventually get one. I guess we may take something like Shutterbug's suggestion - vehicular video cam - if it's not too expensive and going to save on body paint work (not to mention peace of mind) over the long run.

Actually I was always thinking of getting me one of those gadgets in Bond movie. Esp that one that send electric currents to the person who touches the car. No need to kill just stun him like a stun gun can liao

But really pity that driver who parks too close to my car... his A R S E will be fried while coming out of his/her vehicle... Laughing

huh? is there really such a technology.. to electrify all the surfaces? or just a bond movie thingy. do proximity alarms really work? i’m looking for a better alarm system also =/
