For example, the standard of mandarin in Hong Kong is appalling, but their chinese can knock most of us flat 'cos they come into contact with chinese more often (road signs, food stalls, books etc.)

The Malaysians I know .. their chinese and mandarin better than us.

99percent of the malaysians who are good in mandarin have to trade their standard of english in return.
In other words, most malaysians who speak mandarin as a lst language have pathetic levels of english.
Similar singaporeans have way better english than their malaysians counterparts...although still inferior to english speaking malaysians. generally.

Firstly, we speak mandrain not Chinese.

Secondly, contrary to popular belief.Many Chinese in China know crap about communicating in Mandrain.This may shock you but its true.Not every single Chinese speaks or writes in Mandrain, there are many who still use dialect.

I think it shouldn't be a problem as it has always been my 1st choice of language. So is dialect, although it's not used as regularly these days.

English is my 2nd language, and I suck at it. If you give me all words and no demo, I will go "huh"

Chinese, as an pictographic language, presents a steep learning curve. But once we get the hang of it, it is very interesting. Unlike english .. a super sucky and bastardized language.

Life is so unfair. How come the Japs can use kana in their writings and we cannot use hanyu pinyin? The only place you find hanyu pinyin officially is books for children. Twisted Evil
