KUALA LUMPUR, Sat:
A homemade bomb exploded at the Puduraya bus terminal last night,
injuring an 11-year-old girl.
The victim, Aqilah Nadia Zamzar, was admitted to the Kuala Lumpur
Hospitals paediatric ward with burns on her chest and right hand.
Her condition is listed as stable.
Aqilah was with her aunt in the building when the explosion went
off in between platforms seven and eight, about 9.15pm.
The two were about to board a bus to Kota Tinggi, Johor. Her aunt
escaped injuries in the explosion which occurred about 10 metres
from a police beat base.
Initial investigations revealed that the bomb was made using
carbide and a motorcycle battery.
The device was in a half-full one litre mineral water bottle. It is
not known what liquid was inside the bottle.
It is learnt that the bomb was placed in a plastic bag and left on
a seat. It allegedly went off when the girl pushed the plastic bag
away to sit down.
It is also believed that police have seized the tapes from several
closed-circuit television cameras for investigations.
Kuala Lumpur acting police chief SAC I Zulhasnan Najib Baharuddin
said the canine unit was also deployed to ensure that the area was
free from any other explosives.
"It is too early to say anything now," Zulhasnan said.
A stall owner, Zainon Osman, 45, said the explosion caused chaos in
the terminal with many people running for cover.
"I was in my stall when the explosion went off. I heard a loud bang
and saw fire and smoke," she said.
"I also saw a child with her hair on fire."
Kamarul Mohd, 39, who mans the Transnasional ticket counter, said
he never expected an explosion in the terminal but was thankful not
many were hurt.
An official from the Puduraya management said there was no damage
to the building and services werent disrupted.
