We booked a car last week with the price based on the previous COE level of $9600 (above 1600cc cat)... yet at the conclusion of yesterday's bidding, even though the COE for this cat dropped to $9500, the car dealer had the cheek to call and tell us that he failed to get the COE! Confused

I was just wondering, has anyone had this experience? I mean, isn't it abit too much that they did not bid at the level that they had sold the car for? Rolling Eyes

I got my COE on the 4th bid. Anyway I had up to 6th bid before I got back my booking fee. I had rejected all the offer of topping up my COE for the previous 3 failed bids.

Guess it's logical that the waiting time will be long if the demand is high. But then even when the demand is not high, your dealer may bid skyrocket high bid amount for you and you still end up will not get your COE till the last bid.

But I feel that the bid amount submitted by your dealer is "kelong" and I think it's really unfair that as an owner of a new car, we have no say on the bid amount. Somemore your dealer is using your IC number to bid for you. May be it's the system that is at fault? Or may be somebody is making use of the loophole of the system to manipulate the COE figures?

The only rule of this COE game is: Do not bow to the pressure from your SE/dealer to top up for a open cat COE. If you have the time to wait for your COE, it's better to wait. Then you won't "lugi" on your $ by paying COE that cost you more now but getting it lesser at the end of 10 years.

For every COE that the dealer bid, they have to put 10k deposit with you-know-who. Hence, the dealer will usually get the COE only when the car is avaliable or coming in very soon. Otherwise, all their money will be stuck with You-know-who !!!

Unfortunately, COE bidding in not as easy as we like to think. Even though the system allows for us to bid our own COE, but as most people are not able to come up with 10k cash for the bidding deposit, the dealers will end up bidding instead.

Unless a significant group of buyers bid for their own COE and demand for dealers to sell car without COE, otherwise this trend will continue.

How many people do you know of that can come-up with $10k for COE bidding plus a few more $K for car deposit ?

Now the dealer is saying that they have several open cat COEs on hand, and are asking if we are interested.

However, the SE warned that since many cefiro buyers failed to get the COEs this time, the demand for these open cat COEs is likely to exceed the number that they already have on hand. So which means if we are interested, need to fill up the form and wait for the company to decide who to give these open cat COEs to. Hmmm... never knew getting a car is so complicated. Confused

If you are not in a hurry, tell them so and just wait and you'll get your car at your price. They want your business, but just hope to earn more from you.

But if you want a car fast, 1k may not be alot of money if you spread over 10 yrs.

Yes, $1k is no big deal over 10 years for an open cat COE but someone from one of the car forums was saying that at the end of 10 years, it won't be the value of open cat COE anymore but it will be either the value of a cat A or cat B depending on your car engine capacity.

So it's like you're paying more now for your COE but getting it lesser later. Don't know how true is this?

Don’t waste money topping up, COE will go further south. Instead top up your cash card cause more ERP gantry will be up all over the island in the coming years.

tell them not to make their problem your problem. EIther they give you the COE or you take back your deposit. Simple as that. the S&P Agmt states $9600 like you said so no reason why you can't have your COE and car.

In fact, when i get new car, in the agmt for eg: COE bid 10k. i will just tell them i expect to get my COE at the first bid and i dun intend to pay more even if COE rises. if they fail to obtain the COE, i dun mind waiting for the 2nd bid but my trade-in value of the car will remain the same as previously agreed.

I dun believe in SEs making their problem my problem. They earn more than enough from us to solve these stupid problems.

There may be some paper value if you intend to buy new car at the end of 10 years. Else, it's zero value.

The SE is now telling me that I won't have to top up for the open cat COE, because the open cat COE this time is $9200+, which is lower than the cat B COE ($9500)..

only $300 difference !! Go for it since it doesn't cost you extra. Just take it that you got the cat B COE at 9200.
