Sometimes we got to be critical on how they come up with such conculsions.

Please remember that Air Bags and especially side air bags are new technologies that came up in the 1970s but only really implemented from early 90s. Side Airbags from late 90s.

So before the 90s, are they trying to say all cars are not safe?

Anyway, whether a car is safe or not i feel is dependant on the person behind the wheel.

A Benz S-class can be a safe car, but on ice its becomes a really hazard to OTHER drivers as it's weight can be a flying missile if they slip on ice.

For their conclusion of cheaper equal to less safe, I seriously think it's a haphazard way of saying things. Yes, they are cheap because they lack the frills like Airbags. But they are saying it is only not safe if it is involved in an accident.

I don't believe a Kia Piccanto will just explode from no where just because it is cheap. Plus, adding airbags is about $3000-4000 extra.

If you drive safe, why would the car be unsafe?

i think ultimately, we should view a car's safety from a passive safety deviced POV. and that means the protection a car's occupants get in a crash.

And for that, the Euro NCAP ratings i reckon, are still the most telling set of standards for us to rely on.

im sure we all noe how to drive safe... and are safe on the road.. but all u need is to meet one dangerous driver on the road who is coming straight at u... then ur oni protection is ur reaction in those milliseconds... and the integrity and crashworthiness of ur car that would let u walk away from the wreck.. or have u helped from the wreck by the stretcher..

sure its always the driver..

all im trying to say is.. if u get into a situation not of ur own making.. and after that the oni defining factor is the "safeness" of ur car in making sure u r alrite after the accident..

we cannot be naive to keep thinking that we will never get into an accident by being ultra safe with ur driving.. look at it this way.. even ultra sfety driver cannot siam a drunk speedster driving on the wrong side of a narrow road..

yes its the driver. but what about other people that smash into your car? for such reasons consumers would want a car that can protect the occupants. Surely the driver cant do everything? it will be inevitable that accidents will happen and it may not be even both driver's fault. due to poor weather or suddenly the tree fell and causing motorists to swerve then causing an accident. If the car cannot protect the occupants, its as good as buying a motorised coffin isn't it?

I for sure would rather buy a vehicle that can offer the occupants good protection because anything can happen and s h i t happens

Well, while i know you can be a safe driver but you can be unlucky enough to meet up with a reckless guy. That's why we learn how to drive defensively and proactively.

Some car designs have safety features to protect you like as if you are in a solid cage. Despite the best protection, you are still at the mercy of that reckless guy.

While i agree some cars will protect you better than others. but the laws of physics still apply.

I have seen a BMW 330cxi rammed onto a lamppost. the car is sliced into half. and the engine block flew 150m away. all 4 occupants died.

This guy rammed at estimated of 150-180kmh. So even if you think you are properly protected, your recklessness still can't help you.

i noe my altis unsafe la...

but it is a fact, i'm on stock wheels, very unsafe. profile too high, can feel the "drag" and kantong too soft, when cut corner, can feel the car shift... u shld noe, tt day at marina, i cut corner at high speed, i have to purposely understeer in order to let the car turn in the curve, or not it will sure skid...

tt's y some of my altis frenz, change the springs to harder springs and on day one the car come out of the garage, they immediately change the wheels to 15" or 16" and lower profile tyres...

eh hello! my car oso not exactly sporty leh.. but i was at about the same speed as u! and i took the inner lane leh... and stayed in the lane leh :p

actually i was hoping something like understeering happening lah... but it didnt... that shows that the car's limit is a little bit higher than what our balls think.... so far lah..
