Wearing of graduation gowns in polys

It's quite interesting what... I mean after 3 years of education from a tertiary institute, it's just nice to end it with a formal ceremony with scholarly gowns... Those who dont like the idea or who are too ashamed of their achievements can choose not to attend what.. It's their own choice... Uni convocation also like that... You have a choice...

I think for diploma graduates, they only wear the gown right? No hat right? (actual term for the hat is called mortarboard)

For Uni, the gowns of the various faculties are differentiated by the colour of the strips... And then the gown designs are different for Bachelor, Masters, PhD...

Are the colour codes of the strips same for both NUS and NTU?

As for poly, what is the gown system like? Can anyone explain? Each poly has their own gown design and colour regardless of the courses?

Actually not completely true.

IMO, poly wants to raise their status to be similar to uni.
But I think they should raise the standard of students to match uni students first.

poly students hold tertiary concession card;
jc students n ite students still holding secondary concession card.

so

poly > jc

no flamin pls cos the fact dat even in SAF, poly graduates command higher salaries than jc graduates.

actually its useless and dumb, and a waste of money. if they want, the pple who want to wear it can wear and show off. let the rest jsut wear whatever they want, if they go that is.

the only reason i went for my uni grad ceremony was for my parents. otherwise its just a ceremony/ritual, no real importance to me. i would rather display my cert than my grad photo

Before the poly vs JC war starts again, let me remind you guys that you cannot compare poly (diploma) with JC ('A' levels)... simply becos poly provides tertiary education and JC does not...

So if there really is any comparison to be made, it's poly vs uni becos both provides tertiary education and both prepares students for the working environment.

this applied to nus maybe. i know dat nus doesnt train students on job training. students from nus r not require to go for IA unless volunteer.

It's not that I'm a stickler about graduation gowns being used exclusively for University graduations. But I wonder what is the rationale behind the polytechnics wanting to adopt this tradition as well. If it is so that the gowns can give more "clout" or "prestige" to their graduation, then I think this move is misguided. Polytechnics should be confident enough in their programs and students to not need to borrow anything from university practices.

If the wish is so that there is some sort of standard attire for the graduation, I think a school jacket and tie (for guys) will do nicely.

i think they want the students to feel proud of themselves. that for the most of em, they achieved sth in their life for the first time.

i think one of the reason is dat some students treat these ceremony very informality. some students (merit holder from china somemore) even worn school shoes to collect their cert.

the introduce of gowns will made the ceremony more grand. with this, i believe there will be reduction of pple not attending it.

Perhaps it's just me, but if I were graduating from poly I don't see how that gown will add any value. It IS an achievement in itself. Err actually do any poly graduates doubt that? Confused

IMO if one already has a lackadaisical attitude towards the ceremony and did not want to attend (not that there's anything wrong with that) , the gown is just extra hassle, extra unnecessary expense, and all the more reason to avoid. Laughing But that's just my thinking lah.

during my time, merit holders were different becos they need to wear a black blazer in addition while the rest r just formal.

i wonder how they going to differential the different now since everyone wearing gown now?
