SAF tests new rocket launchers
THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has
successfully completed its first live-firing exercise with its own
truck-mounted rocket launchers.
The 13-day joint exercise at Fort Sill in the United States,
which ended on Sunday, involved 170 soldiers from the 23rd
Battalion Singapore Artillery and US Army units.
The artillery unit has been training with the US-made rocket
launchers – known as High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems in
military parlance – for more than a year now, but took delivery of
its own 18 launchers only in July.
Each of the 7m-long self-propelled launchers, which are capable
of top speeds of 100kmh, can shoot six missiles at targets 70km
away.
After firing, the launcher and its crew members can be on the
move in 20 seconds so as to avoid enemy counter-attacks.
The exercise, known by the code-name Daring Warrior, was
witnessed by the Ministry of Defence’s assistant chief of general
staff for operations, Brigadier-General Tung Yui Fai, and
Major-General David Halverson, commanding general of the US Fires
Centre of Excellence.
