US SOCOM abandon SCAR

USA is a country hard to adopt change. we have to wait for the reasons.

i am not saying SCAR is a good nor bad rifle. just curious why US army waste so much time in replacing rifles.

Ya--the yankees can afford no time frame in doing things.

To them, the rifle in army is not top priority.

Like keeping the 50 years design M 16 or slightly improved M4,

this is politically decision rather than military operational needs one.

SOCOM said it will instead purchase additional Mk-17 variants that use the heavier 7.62 mm round, more Mk-13 Enhanced Grenade Launchers, and a newly-designated Mk-20 Sniper Support Rifle. (Industry observers say the Mk-20 is basically the Mk-17 with long

Assault rifle design has plateaued. There is really not many significant advantages or differences between the various designs most of which are basically very mature designs. The developments have been largely evolutionary mainly to make them lighter, more ergonomic , more relaible, more rugged etc .

No surprise that SCAR Mk 16 was dropped. It did not justify the expense & complexity of having another rifle in the inventory when an M16 or M4 can also do the job just as well.

Going with the Mk17 is a step in the right direction - 7.62's got a helluva lot more stopping power than 5.56, and since Somalia the unsuitability of the M855 in modern combat situations has already been apparent.

Shotgun SG

Hell of a better reach as well. Given the precision engineering and emerging modern optical technologies, the 7.62 should be able to accurately engage farther as well. Pretty much direct relevance to the ongoing guerrilla type of fighting in the open and hilly terrain of A'stan.

They dont need to when they have P rails on their rifles. As a consequence, they are also spoilt for choice where optics and other accessories are concerned.

Shotgun SG

When the rest of the world decides to move towards P-rails and holographic sights, ST still came out with the brick heavy Sar-21 with built-in everything. =D
