The Singapore Navy is
tasked with securing a very sensitive area as well
as disputed territorial waters off
it's coasts. The sea lanes that lead to the Malaya Straits very
vital to South East Asian countries, china,Japan,South Korea
economic interests specifically shipping and trade. This Victory
class corvettes have been the backbone of the RSN for a long time
that the government wants to replace them with newer
corvettes.
In 1983, the RSN ordered six Victory class corvettes from Fredrich Lürssen Werft of
Germany.[15]
The first corvette was built in Germany while the remaining five
were built locally by ST Marine. The corvettes were also the first
class of ships in the RSN to have an anti-submarine
capability.[16]
The corvettes are noted for their tall mast, making them top-heavy
compared to ships of similar class. However, this is suitable
within the fairly calm Singapore waters.[citation needed] The
six corvettes form the 188 Squadron of the RSN.
