so long as this thread has changed into criticizing hyundai, I
think we need to have some advocates including me. Strangely to
say, I wonder whether we can compare different segment cars
manufactures here.

As we can learn from toyota, I think, toyota, honda or hyundai are
able to produce high performance engine, however they may not be
able to sell it in the market with high price tag as their badge is
not made by european (i'm not imperialist though).
However i don't think engine itself makes the best car as there
could be other factors (e.g., transmission, brake, body rigidity
and so on). Personally honda's engine is as good as bmw's, but i
don not consider honda as the best car manufactuer.
BTW, all the latest hyundai's engines are par with toyota/honda's
in terms of hp and fuel econonmy (new sonata, azero and 1.6s),
however I do not consider them as good as toyota/honda's cars as i
know it may take some time to wipe out old
thinkings/perception.
Though one thing I'm sure is that there is no other car
manufacturers who can make car like hyundai with that budget (or
money for value, i mean quality versus money). As a humble salary
man i think hyundai contribute a lot to singaporeans (for some
sense we may not be able to buy corolla with current price without
hyundai's budget cars though we consider the change of coe)
Now hyundai is a great contender to major car makers(not only
toyota and honda), and some of it's models are in my shopping list
in coming year.
Little i doubt hyundai can be the survivor at least 10 years time
or by the time china start to produce quality stuffs.
German/jap cars owe their reputation to war(esp., WWII) however
korea/singapore was none the less victim of them(compassion
right?). when bmw, mitsubish, fuji had made fighters or toyota, mb,
vw made trucks for war we singaporean had suffered from their
domination (and we consider that war is their heritage and compare
victims with rulers).
