i like to address the high cost of university education not only in singapore but everywhere in the world.

the cost of university degree education ranges from 25 k to 35k approxiamtely.
it is quite obvious in the world of digital information, people can actually buy textbooks and self study.

there are certain things that you require a university body like use of expensive labs equipment, and access to journal papers. However the bulk of the information like lecture notes and textbooks can be purchased and self study.

however, there is no option for university to allow people to self study so that they can no need to pay the expensive lecture fees and they only need to pay smaller sum for use of labs or hands on activities. too bad i am going to finish my uni soon so i have to pay the money of few tens of thousands.

from business point of view, university would want to have the money but this is inefficient to the society on the long run.

why cannot there be a private candidate system like o level and a level?

If you spend $10k on education, and you earn back only 5k additional in your life time, it’s simple maths, you shouldn’t study, you’re losing money. If you spent $50k on education, and you earn back 100k additional in your life time, then it’s well worth it. So there is no right or wrong, an expensive education could be worth it, or a cheap education may not be worth it, in fact even no education could be a good choice, it’s about your own judgement to see if you can earn them back.

Who will give you the recognition?

A university degree isn't all about mugging and regurgitating at exams.

You can study all by yourself, but in the end you want that piece of paper that tells anyone who looks at it that you have attained a level of learning on that subject.
Who do you want to give you that paper?
A recognised institute of learning.
And that don't come cheap.

no offences to undergraduates. a degree might be important if u are into bussiness or management related jobs but for engineering it's a totally different story.

engineering requires experiences. imagine this, two 20 years old after NS, 1 started working as a engineer and the other goes into university.

4 years later, the 2nd guy finally graduated. but the 1st guy will already has 4 years of working and engineering experiences while the 2nd guy is only a noob with no working experiences and only textbook knowledge of what he learnt in university.

from my experiences, employers/customers/clients' expectations for a good engineer is that they don't care whether u are a degree holder or O level, as long as u can set up/troubleshoot and maintain the system, u are the person they want. Laughing
