I was born in Saudi Arabia March 10, 1957. My father was a wealthy
businessman. He built his fortune as a building contractor for the
Saudi royal family during the 1950s. He married 22 times, although
to no more than four women at a time and had 55 children. I was
number seventeen, of his tenth wife. My parents divorced soon after
I was born. My mother married a guy who worked for my fathers
company. I lived in the new household with three stepbrothers and
one stepsister.
I was raised as a devout Sunni Muslim and attended the most
prestigious secondary school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, called "the
school of the élite. I studied economics and business
administration at the University in Jeddah and also earned a degree
in civil engineering. During that time, I was exposed to the
radical political teachings of the Muslim Brotherhood and joined an
Islamic study group. One of the most influential ideas was the
importance of jihad against all that is un-Islamic in the
world.
In 1974, at the age of 17, I married my first wife, my first cousin
from Syria. In total I have married four other women and divorced
one. They were all university lecturers, highly educated, and from
distinguished families. I have fathered between 12 and 24 children,
