Power Adaptors

Does anybody know how to find out if a power adaptor is suitable for use with a product that uses "5V 2.4A" power adaptors?

My mp3 player is usually charged by plugging it into my computer's USB port, but it can also be charged using a power adaptor with a USB plug thingy.

I just stumbled upon a power adaptor with the USB plug thingy. It belongs to some other appliance but I'm not sure which, since I found it in a box containing some other things.

So how do I read the label to find out if I can use that power adaptor with my mp3 player?

I thought as long as USB, the power conform to certain standard one? If not the adaptor itself should indicate in a sticker or something.

You’ve to read the labels that’s on the power adapter which you’re intending to use. It will tell you it’s output power. Using higher power than that which is suitable for your devices will cause a power surge and ‘kills’ it.

My fren brought a brandless USB power adaptor . change 1 hour liao smoke started coming out from the adptor….

I don't know what brand is mine, but it has a safety mark and a serial number (which is why I suspect it does belong to one of the gadgets we have at home but dunno which, and could be one my dad brought overseas so I can't check).

5V 2.4A is actually quite a lot leh

USB Port max can give out 500mA nia, and that is only when the device request from the port then the controller supplies 500mA, other wise its 100mA only.

i'm not an expert. but it is advisable to get a power adapter that produce a current that is equal or slightly higher den wat is needed. you say ur device require 2.4A but adapter only produces 1A. dunnoe if it do any damage on long term basis.

i might need a power adaptor for about a week in april to charge the player, so i'm not too inclined to the idea of buying another...

i tell u its not safe to use another adapter for ur mp3.. i screwed my creative zen just by using another usb charger.. Laughing

If you want to play safe, how about trying Travel Pac adapters? But it’s not that cheap

That adaptor can be used for the purpose you want. The current does not matter at all.

In essence, what's stated in your AC adapter (using the principles of a transformer) basically tells you that adaptor converts an AC input VOLTAGE source of anything between 100V and 240V to a DC output VOLTAGE source of 5V(which is exactly what you want).

The stipulated current there does not affect the performance of your source (it'd be quite monotonous if I explained it to you in technical/engineering terms). Just bear in mind it's the VOLTAGE that powers your mp3 player, not the CURRENT (I'm sure you know batteries come in various voltages for a reason).
