Element of surprise is essential to execute a successful ambush
on a superior force. No surprise, ambusher get killed
instead.
With surprise, aggression and speed, inferior force have high
chance to dominate a superior force. You can kill someone staying
in fortified position if you can surprise him as well.
In conclusion, all military offensive action require some element
of surprise to be successful.
