Apache can drop iron bombs?

last SG · 2007-12-25T02:27:20+00:00

the Apache is not much cheaper than a F-16, and so are the weapons. Apache to drop dumb bombs is STUPID, because people who can afford Apaches, can afford f...

tankee1981 SG

Can Apache helicopters drop dumb bombs? The IAF's Mi-35 have this ability and i find it quite interesting as it is not a commonly advertised capability. Very Happy

Alvin.Yeoh SG

I’ve never heard of it but why would you want to?

chino65 SG

How do they do it? Armed the bombs by hand and then roll it out the door? Mr. Green

Have to say it is a hell lot cheaper than firing rockets.

tankee1981 SG

There is this little part about this Mi-35 dropping a free-fall bomb onto a target in the clip.

cant remember which country got 1 country using modded UH-1H as heli-bomber…..

datafuser SG

Recently Lebanon used UH-1 helos as bombers and El Salvador did so in the 1980's.

Also IIRC, Egyptian Mi-8 helos dropped napalm bombs in the 1973 war.

the Bear SG

they can drop any effing thing they want.. what are you going to do? stop them? Laughing

Shotgun SG

No. I'll point an IGLA at it.

CM06 SG

Talking about iglas, one thing i dont understand about it is why our M113s iglas only have gpmg to accompany them.

I wish they can mate a pair of 50 cals or 40mm AGL with air burst ammunition in the rear compartment then it's able to have more effective anti air and even anti infantry ability.

tankee1981 SG

I agree with your point. But our Igla M113 is meant to counter low-flying aerial threats and thus the choice of Iglas(it is assumed that any armoured assault will only commence after our RSAF have obtained ais superiority).

Since it is for countering low level aircraft(most likely helicopters), Iglas will do well. As to why GPMG is chosen is because as its name implies its general purpose. It can be used against low flying aerial targets and against ground troops for self defence.

The 0.5HMG while good against helicopters might be abit of an overkill to be used againsty infantry. Further more it is very likely that this Igla M113 is being accompanied by Ultras,BX and SM1, so self defence is not so high on the agenda.

chino65 SG

Or could it be a simple issue of storage space?

You should be carrying more missiles with the space available. GPMG ammo takes up less space than .5 or 40mm grenades.

But these things changes can easily change as the situation demands. IDF AFV's all carry about 2 - 3 GPMGs/HMG not counting the main armament into battle.

duotiga83 SG

Now this is something...... Shocked

PICTURE: Spain's Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopters to use Spike missiles
By Arie Egozi

The Spanish armys future fleet of 24 Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopters are to be equipped with Rafael Spike-ER air-to-surface missiles, following the signature of a $60 million contract between the Israeli manufacturer and local partner General Dynamics Santa Barbara.

Madrid had also evaluated the Lockheed Martin AGM-114 Hellfire and MBDA Trigat LR weapons for its Tigers, but the Rafael design emerged as a clear favourite earlier this year, after the army selected its Spike-LR system to meet a $425 million land forces requirement for 2,600 anti-tank missiles.

With a maximum range of 8km (4.3nm), the electro-optically-guided Spike-ER (one missile shown above on Tiger's starboard weapons pylon) can be launched in three modes: fire and forget; fire, observe and update, using a fibre-optic datalink; and fire and steer, where the 33kg (73lb) missile is launched without first having locked onto a target.

martin_lim85 SG

can be done ba but must be at certain height?

whitenoise SG

Possibly space constraints because the M113 is a small vehicle and because they probably will not encounter ground troups directly. But why the Igla? For a modern SAM, its kill probablity is very low.

spartan6 SG

Dun think so, for 1 fact e Mi-35/24 & KA-50/52 can carry bomb cos they r very fast, dropping bomb require u 2 fly over e target.

SingaporeMacross SG

hahaha, reminds me of Metal Slug.

tankee1981 SG

They fly faster than Apaches? I am not so sure of their maximum speed when fully armed though.

Shotgun SG

Don't really need to fly over. There's always a loft option.

Still, bombs have very limited use on attack helicopters. AHs are meant to kill vehicles, tanks, etc over great ranges.

spartan6 SG

2 use loft bombing an aircraft must travel above certain speed & copter r not fast enough Neutral And yes both e Mi-24/35 & KA-50/52 r faster then e Apache in level flight Neutral
