Will any of our SAF Officers do this for the men?

Such acts of bravery are not planned, they happen in the heat of the moment. So it is prejudicial to assume locals won’t throw themselves on a grenade. Shoul...

I don't know who you are talking about but my favourite local hero is Lt Adnan, whose platoon fought till nearly wiped out after inflicting heavy casualties on the Japs.

Unfortunately, Adnan is Malaysian.

So if anyone thinks the MAF is gonna be a push over ....

fudgester SG

I didn't hear of this...

... but I have heard of an officer who shielded his REC's body with his own when the latter dropped his grenade.

He took quite a few hits from the grenade shrapnel.

adnan at that time were not malaysian dude...hes malayan...and most of his 42 odd men that defend that hills were locals (singapore) malay soldier.

stellazio SG

did he die?

wonderamazement SG

Yea did he? Shocked

Ionlytalknoaction SG

I Salute him for dying to protect his own men.

As for whether SAF officers will risk their lives for their soldiers.

If you ask anybody this stupid question,

They will be like saying," Do You think I will be stupid?"

The army rule is that officers must protect recruit's lives with their own lives.

However, the reality is far from the truth.

I mean come on, Singaporean society is one man for himself.

(Correct me if I am wrong).

fudgester SG

From what I heard, he was pretty seriously injured and had to spend some time in hospital, but he recovered.

I don't really know the details.... I just remembered that my Encik told this story to us a few years ago.

wonderamazement SG

Whoa... Power! Salute ah!

kengkia SG

Lt. Adnan eh...

Lim Bo Seng

a Force 136 comando...cought by the Japanese army and tortured to death.

Don't grieve for me, but take pride in my sacrifice. Devote yourself to the bringing up of the children.

in a final letter to his wife.

Tan Chong Tee

took part in Operation Gustavus to resist the Japanese occupation. However, he was later captured in 1944 and spent the next 18 months in jail under the torture of the Japanese troops. When Tan was finally released from jail, he found out that his older brother Tan Chong Mao was executed by the Japanese and his mother was beaten to death by the Japanese.

He wrote an autobiography to tell the heroic stories of Force 136.

hes the one who wrote about mr Lim above

sgf SG

Not exactly the same story but a PC apparently got struck by lightning ‘cos he went back to check on his troops who were still on a hill. Was mentioned by a 3SG during the recent 30min documentary on NS a few weeks back.

caleb_chiang SG

Hmm... think the closest thing I heard is that an officer put the guy away during the generade throw...

Another one is that my friend kena pulled down by his officer during his throw as he was standing there waiting to see the generade explode... Laughing

This will always depend on the type of officer you had

For junior officer(PC and OC)

In time of firefight, buddy_ship outstrip ranks. You will have to rely on your men to look out and protect you, while you have to give them the correct directions and commands.

Any one cook up then both party will suffer. On one can gain any out of and down fall of another.

As for senior and staff officers, i am not sure of that .... Shocked

Orcishwarrior SG

Dream Very Happy in singapore many officers are selected out for their academic achievement align with influence of their parent or relative.

Maybe most are smart and quick enough to "siam" rather than bounding on a grenade. ok Probably a handful will find a better alternative other than bounding on it. Very Happy

FireAndHell SG

If I am not wrong, that person was a fulltime NS Officer. Happened sometime in the 70s during live granade throwing exercise.

justcooler SG

Then in that case we better migrate oversea, leader that can't lead and man that is unwilling to listen. Our army is out to show with no real stuff seem to be quite true.

playtime SG

judging by some of the replies, this is surely one of those silly officer Vs men, us Vs them kind of tread.

why not turn it around and ask: "Are local men worth their officers dying for them?".

in France, an NSF officer mentioned that he volunteered for the legion because the men were worth dying for. so how?

Orcishwarrior SG

Well..Officers take the lead. Man follow by example..so there's no such things as the other way round. Laughing its the FACT.

Given a choice:
follow a warden officer or a comissioned officer i would rather pick a warden
Anyway PERIOD..dont wish to argue over it Very Happy
