Dr Who SG dead civilians caught in the war in former Yugoslavia......... What should civilians do in a war? Run far far away........like Australia?
fallin SG I believe there is really very little civilians can do during wartime. I suppose the next best thing is to ensure that the wars your country fight are far far away from your homeland. Have a look at the United States, the lower 48 states haven’t been attacked by a sovereign nation in the past 200 or so years.
Arapahoe SG I would not use Yugoslavia as an example as ethnic cleansing cover most region so the picture doesn't tell if those bullet in their body belong to the soldier in picture.
Arapahoe SG the way conflict are happening clearly show that Just because a military walk over the city and does not represent unarm civilian surrender with it. It is almost impossible to tell resistant individual vs civilian.
tankee1981 SG Yes i believe this particular picture won some prizes and is famous during the Vietnam War era.
Si Geena SG Is summary execution allowed just because he's an enemy officer? Doesn't make sense at all, when that enemy is clearly of no danger.
Obersturmfuhrer SG That picture signalled the beginning of the end for the Vietnam War. Sentiments got so bad when the public saw this picture and more anti-war rallies sprung up nationwide in the US.
SingaporeTyrannosaur SG You ought to read the story behind it, that VC dude did some rather nasty personal things to the guy pulling the trigger, if I was the shooter, I am not sure if I would have been able to control myself back then.
Dr Who SG I think the photo which turned american public opinion was this : Friendly fire : Children burnt by Napalm bombs dropped by US planes
Dr Who SG The other one was this : Viet women and children civilians shot in cold blood by US troops........the troops even dared to kill in the presence of the Press.....
Dr Who SG In the US, troops even shot their own students who protested against the war........like Tienanmen....... Students run for cover....... Dead student at Kent State University.....also victim of Vietnam war half a world away......
Dr Who SG These Chinese civilians were not killed in a war. They were run over by army tanks trying to break up a student protest at Tiananmen in Beijing in 1989. Chinese leaders still refuse to talk openly about the Tiananmen Incident till today.....pui.... What happened? It started with stdents protesting against corruption: protesting students Army over-reacts by shooting and waging war on students and civilians............hundreds killed.......
chino65 SG WHAT? What "nasty personal things"? Like slept with his wife etc? The shooter had barely set eyes on the victim for more than one second before shooting him. This shooting is not just a famous stills picture but also available as a film footage on most Vietnam War documentaries. We were shown this documentary during the initial part of recruit days. Here's the story: The shooter is a ARVN high-ranking officer. He's out on the streets/battle zone directing people while being filmed. He had just come direct from home because this was the Tet Offensive and the streets of Saigon was suddenly a battle zone. This may explain why he was armed with a small personal snub-nosed revolver. A trooper drags the suspect to the officer and said that he is a VC saboteur. Without a single word, the officer drew his revolver and shoots the suspect in the temple. All in a matter of 2 seconds without ceremony or questioning. The VC suspect falls sideways down as blood spurts out of the entry wound. The victim is NOT A CONFIRMED VC as far as most people were concerned- as he was never even questioned before being shot dead. THAT's WHY, this picture helped turn public opinion against the war. (Actually it was the film footage but a stills picture is easier to icon-ize.) The Napalm Girl picture also helped turned public opinion against the war. Both pictures showed how much more harm US involvement is doing. There was a story more than 10 years ago about the Napalm Girl and ARVN officer. They were both living in the US. I think the ARVN officer owned a restaurant.
richong 3216 SG USA - big, prosperous & beautiful God given land of the free - they should live happily ever after rather than going thousands of kilometres to some God forsaken countries to kill & be killed. The picture shown was the My Lai massarce in the Vietnam war which caused millions of Vietnamese lives & about 58,000 US troops before the war ended.
