anyway, here is an essay i did as a benchmark/reference for my
old time kaki.
To me, I believe racism in Singapore exists, partly due to feedback
from other people and experiencing it first hand.
Although many ministers in Singapore try to cover it up in order to
keep singapores image as a first class country, the truth lies
before our eyes, that racism is existent in Singapore
. Most
usually or not, locals working in the service industry tend to
favour Caucasians to Asians or local people, this could be due to
the colonization of Singapore by the brithis a long time ago that
gave us Singaporeans, the impression that the Caucasians and
superior in every way and so, they deserve better. Here is
something a friend of mine experienced first hand, one day, at the
food court, he was lining up at a stall where a Caucasian lined up
before him, the auntie(middle aged lady) was very friendly when
it was the caucasians turn to order food, the auntie became very
friendly, what would you like sir? You want more vegetable? and
even served up a noticeable increase in the serving of food
(noodles in the case), and when it came to my friends turn, he
decided to be more polite and friendly seeing the dames
friendliness but before he could say a single word, the middle aged
lady shot him a glare and said, what (you want)??, my friend
could only sheepishly answer prawn noodles(mee) before the lady
gave him another stare before serving up the noodles and had his
change thrown at him.
Recently, I have also read in the newspaper forum page, again, the
case was unfair treatment, the ang mo(Caucasian)tourist got free
drinks and a tissue box on the house and everyone else had to pay
for drinks and the tissue and when asked, the waiter was too, rude
in reply.
Other than to the Caucasians, the locals are racist to each other,
too, for example, there are still cases of one group of people of a
race beating up someone of the other, just because he/she is of the
minority race. And in a typical school, most of the time, students
of any class are known to be in cliques based on their race, with
only a few exceptions. But all that is in the past with the efforts
of the government over the years, the people of different races are
warming up to each other, playing, chatting, and helping each other
out in the HDB apartments and this is a good sign of Singapore
progressing as a nation.
Conclusion, there IS racism in Singapore but it is no longer among
us Chinese, malays, or Indians but we still have to overcome the
Caucasian barrier
Written in haste, so heck it lar.
