Design a robot which can operate a lift for urban warfare.

DSTA is with a fat budget $$$

The developers of the autonomous robot that completes all the stipulated tasks most quickly within a specified time will be awarded a prize of S$1 million.

Competition Scenario

The TechX Challenge Robot must be capable of autonomous navigation and target identification and engagement.

It will have to navigate its way through a number of different settings, from an outdoor environment to an indoor urban location. Along the way, the robot has to overcome obstacles, negotiate stairs, operate an elevator to reach a particular floor in the building to search for and engage designated static targets before proceeding back to the starting point.

The robot will be expected to have the relevant payloads to facilitate navigation and execution of the tasks as required.

USD$ 600,000 and they want a robot with AI that can do all this? Really Ai Peenh Ai Cheenh Ai Dua Liap Ni...

DARPA has been at this for damn long and spend even more money than this and DSTA figure that 1 mil SGD can get them to come up with something?

At most they'll get partial products nia. Maybe 1/4 the AI (for targetting), and some crappy robotic limb for stairs, and maybe roller blades for roads. SHEESH!

Add 1 more zero to their prize, then I think there will be more companies who will find it profitable to get involved. Otherwise... Singaporeans being Singaporeans... "waste time, waste money, who will do?"

You obviously are not into AI and computational vision Smile . Operating the lift is probably the easiest of the required tasks. I should know as I had taught introductory courses on AI and also had been doing vision research for close to a decade.

Team members can come from all over the world.

The team manager can only represent one TechX Challenge team and must satisfy all of the following criteria:
- He/She must be a Singapore Citizen.

- He/She is expected to take a leading technical role.

- He/She must be present at the qualifying round and at the final competition.

ii. All team members should be identified on the registration form. There is no restriction on the number of team members. There is also no restriction on the citizenship of any team member, except that of the team manager.

What a bunch of cheapskates!!!

If someone did manage to design and build one, they should forget about the lousy SGD 1 mil and shop around for international buyers who would easily pay 3 to 4 times that amount.

Why would you want a warfare robot to take the lift in the first place?

to announce to the bad guys it's coming to get them?

Well, better to have it and don't need it and need it and don't have it.

What if it was entering a non hostile building, prehaps to go to a level to observe a street?

Would it make sense to drive it up the stairs just because it could not do something which is roughly the equal of us wiping our butt?

x100. When I read the newspaper, I also think the most challenging is the life.

It is because some lifts are sensor and some are button. The forces required is different. But assume force=max. the robot must be able to apply 2x force to the lifts. But considering center of gravity, this is a very hard project. Somemore is auto, meaning no one control.. making this project more difficult.

Unless they allow to enter a pre-plan to the robot..

Worse not all buttons are layed out the same. some are odd numbers 1 row and even numbers another row.Some are 1,2,3 down heck some lifts buttons on the side not nxt to the door.And then some on the right and some on the left.Programming that AI would be a bitch man

Hire a dwarf and put him inside one of those R2-D2 suits… Give him a digital camera to take pictures… To climb stairs open the bottom portion and use his hands to lift the whole unit up and climb, if got obstacle just chiong straight through… ‘vroooom

On top of the DSTA requirements, the robot should be able to function using 4 AAA energiser batteries. Laughing
