Let me give you further details.. The Defence attache of Singapore Embassy in Jakarta (usually a COL), have to ensure the safety of the Embassy. That's abo...

When i went to do visa in 2005. it was protected by Gurkha guards.. the main security gate was manned by civilian (loca) secruity guys... have to empty all pockets.. go through metal detector, no handphone allowed etc etc....

behind the gate is a Gurkha with a MP5. I walk up that slope to the main entrance... no "Marines" visible at all...

I think i saw another Gurkha somewhere also...

The Gukhas are not visible from the street.. i guess either becuase it is "sensitive" that they have Singapore mecerancies guarding US embassy, or they do not want the Gukhas guards to be vulnerable to any sniper fire in the event of a real attack.

I don't think the Marines are stationed outside. We are not in a warzone. Laughing

Combat exfiltration. The guys were on hostile ground and were armed 24/7.

Isnt there a Standard Rule...Do not fire until Fire upon...

If any of our troops there were shot...there will be quite a political Disaster...I assume...

I dont think SG government is very concerned about the perception of hiring mercenaries for protection. Even LKY's house is protected by grukhas. and they are famed and reputed for loyalty. WW2 provides some instances.

Anyway, I have seen these ghrukas in their distinctive khaki headgear wielding Mp5s at the US embassy at the front gate.

Anyway, the embassy may not be as easy to attack. If you look at the embassy, it IS a fortress. Talk about security i think no one does it better than the yanks. You have to hand it to them.

SpecOps87 SG

Well...that's the famed US ROE. But again...mebbe SAF doesn't practice the same ROE

beavan SG

i think we do.

it's something like "you are authorised to use appropriate force to neutralise a threat to your life, your comrade's life and SAF equipment."

smt like that.

LazerLordz SG

By right, this definition of a threat is quite wide.

SingaporeTyrannosaur SG

i think we do.

lol
armed millitary escort is a must. because dont espect other country soldier come and save your citizen if the airport were rushed by crazy maniac. In that case none.

Arapahoe SG

be4 the embassy move to Niaper road there was a squard or detachment of marine station in Singapore to provide security for the US embassy and its staff. I think they still do. Uncle Sam use to rent a house near united Square vincinity to house the personnel. They do not necessary wear the uniform when they are outside the embassy.

I believe in the past the marine use to rotate out from thailand, with the additional logistics base and bigger embassy building i am sure additional security measure are taken given the terrorist threat around the world.

Arapahoe SG

anymore info than this? how about the protest outside S'pore embassy in Philippine?

Arapahoe SG

i supposed you could call it tested with degree of uncertainty. but i think the picture taken was more symbolic for SAF readiness.

but i remember watching TV where a malaysian had someone holding a malaysian flag pole walking to the plane. That was a strange picture.

Shotgun SG

Yeap, the US Embassy in SG has Marine guards inside. And I think they're armed too though I do not see them carry weapons.

Never saw them at the gates. The guys at the gates are usually police or ghurkas. The marines usually hang around inside, at their security post, iirc in the middle of the foyer.

Arapahoe SG

The outside compound security is Sing gov responsibilities. The security inside the compound belong to uncle sam land. So security naturally fall onto the marine.

SpecOps87 SG

Curious here…do we have guards posted at our overseas missions?
