Battalion or Regiment

I have always thought of this question why are all the infantry and armour units named as Regiment, eg. SIR, SAR? Why are the Guards and Commandoes named as Battalions? I mean some may say regiment is a tradition that was instilled since the colonial days, eg 1SIR. But armour was formed after we became independent, so why is it regiment?

Ermm, Guards and Commandos are also considered regiments.

Regiment means a military unit consisting of a battalion.

So even 1SIR for example, is also a battalion...

Its not an exclusive name for Guards or Commandos.. Very Happy

But of cos, I may be wrong though.

1SIR means, 1st Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment. 1SIR is not a regiment on its own.

3rd Guards means, 3rd Battalion, Guards.

They are all battalions of their respective regiment.

Hmmm.........I still dun get it.

traditionally, 3 regiments make a brigade while 3 battalions make a regiment. But I have seen open sources quoting the structure of SAF as 3 battalions to a brigade, so does this mean regiment is removed from SAF command structure or is regiment for name sake only.

When I did my NS, I was part of the BN block force, which aim is to deny enemy reinforcement to the sector being attacked. The ATEC usually simulates 1 tank, 2 apc, and 2/3 tonners. I heard the umpire speak to the comms as "opforce regiment reserve activated". So is it the difference between a regiment and a battalion is that a regiment have a coy or two of reserves?

Depends on which Formation.

Some sections have 4 men, some have 9. Laughing

Regiments meaning A military unit of ground troops consisting of at least two battalions, usually commanded by a colonel.

Brigade meaning A military unit consisting of a variable number of combat battalions or regiments.

So a Brigade can be 3, 4 or 5 battalions, regiments or both. depend how that army want it to be in and call. keep in mind the strength is not mention in here.

As for ATEC 1 tank blah blah, in short it call ABG. And in SG SAF context it under Bde chat and as to your question on a regiment have a coy or two of reserves? pls read on Regiment as posted in this reply.

no way to compare as what that unit is call as diff country have diff number of man structure in sections, coy, BN, REG, BDE, DIV etc.

SAF may have a BN strength and name it BDE as it going 3G where you need less man to carry out a BDE ops.

Put it this way, example,

1SIR and 4SIR are battalions.

This battalions are under 2SIB which is commanded by a COL.

Erm okay simple terms.

Ours:
Sq->Plt->Coy->Bn-> Bde->Div
They call Regiment cause it's the "old" way of addressing a Bn(or two of men) We down size already but the name sticks for the main unit(tradition i think). But called Bn day to day cause that's only the real number of men anyway.

Others

Some country's Regiment Smaller than Bde...Some LARGER than Bde. It depends on the nation.

This is what I understand the situation to be:
In a way, the word Regiment has become more of a name only.
As a combined arms force, our Regimental HQs have evolved to become Formation HQs. Since we do not have full size Infantry Divisions or Armoured Divisions, it is not practical to include a Regiment-level in our command structure.

So, our Army now goes from Battalion to Brigade, where a Brigade consists or 3 Battalions. Our Regimental HQs (aka Formation HQs) have become Functional Groups which focus solely on practical matters and doctrine.

I guess it sounds pretty confusing right?
It'll sound more complex when the next round of Combined Arms initiatives are implemented.

And yes Sq is the smallest i left out Section (i forgot) Though some platoons consists of only squads. Hehe.

There is no definite number per organisation level. Infantry sections generally have 7 men. But other sections/plt eg, MG, heavy weapons, AT, may have more or less depending on equipment requirements.

Regiment vs Battalion.

In old day, SAF Infantry (SIR & Guard), AI & AR were organized in Regiment, other formations were Battalion.

Reason being is Regiment strength around 900 troops whereas Battalion is around 500 troops. After the reorg & down sizing of SAF fighting troop, today Regiment may be history to SAF.

Note: - Old day, 1 section :- 8 or 9 man depend which period
1 PL :- 3x section
1 Coy :- 3 x section, 1 x support arm section
1 Regiment :- 4 x Coy, 1 support Coy, 1 HQ Coy
1 Bdge :- 4 x regiment, plus various organized Coy/Bty
support arm
1 Div :- 4 x Bdge, plus various Battalion support arm
As such, 1 Div is around 10K troop.

Today, fighting troop down size to x3 (Support arm BN also down size as well). As such, 1 Div is around 7~8K troop.
