Singapore to Acquire Refurbished Leopard Tanks

last SG · 2006-12-11T19:06:02+00:00

And my point is : Nowadays, an uneducated desert insurgent can blow up a tank using IEDs......even the famed indestructible Israeli Makarva or M1 Abrams,,,,...

calvin2224 SG

can we conclude those leo2's spotted in Australia are really ours that were bought long ago and only made public recently. Laughing

ozzy_gurl SG

well maybe so,i dont know.i was told by a friend of mine who is a captain in the ADF.....ive been looking for photos from the ADF sites, but i cnat find any of ANY vehicles...not even helicopters....there seems to be some sort of secrecy rule or something.... Confused

kotay SG

Huh?

Have you tried http://www.defence.gov.au/fotoweb/Grid.fwx

or more specifically ... http://www.defence.gov.au/fotoweb/Grid.fwx?archiveId=5000&SF_LASTSEARCH=&SF_FIELD1_GROUP=1&SF_GROUP1_BOOLEAN=and&SF_FIELD1=leopard&SF_GROUP1_FIELD=IPTC025&doSearch=Search

No Helis, no vehicles? Heck even the dogs have their 5 minutes of fame Rolling Eyes

no offence but sorry gurl, your credibility is taking a hit here ...

ferryman2393 SG

the ADF have leo2? and its shrouded in secrecy? sounds strangely like the SAF's tempest. LOL.

glock SG

I have been to Australia many times & I did not see any Leo2s. Must be best kept secret ; or maybe Leo1s dressed up as Leo2s.

I am also sadly ignorant ; please provide pictures of Leo2s in ADF ; unless they are secret of course. So your saw these Leo2s with your own eyes right ?

ozzy_gurl SG

My credibility is no worry to me,as I am not the one that told myself about the Leo2's Rolling Eyes

For one, that photo with the dog is Air Force...not Army.So far,I have done a few searches(as I'm busy at work) and I have only been able to find photos of Army porsennel...and light vehicles such as Land Cruisers and Troop Carriers...no Tanks or Helicopters as of yet.

ozzy_gurl SG

If you would or read my posts properly you would know that I have not seen them with my own eyes,I was told about them by friends of mine in the ADF,including officers. If a major officer in the ADF tells me their are Leo2's,and they use them in training regularly,I believe him.He should know better than all of us.And from what I can guess so far,I'm starting to think they must be secret,as I can not find any pictures of them,or many other ARMY vehicles.

beavan SG

what would the tanks be needed there for?target practice?

kotay SG

No laddie, your credibility is very much at stake here ... on 2 counts too.

Firstly on this bit ...

Those are very strong words from you proclaiming that you know better (for the reasons you claim above).

BUT you have not been able to provide proof, so ...

i) So either you are wrong, inspite of your strident declarations above about local knowledge and contacts or ...
ii) Your friends are wrong. Given that some of them are officers, If I were you I'd think twice about claiming that they told you porkie pies. or ...
iii) Even worse, all of you are guilty of an OPSEC breach by divulging in open domain the existence of an ADF platform that to date is still not in the open domain.

So which is it?

(second count to follow ....)

kotay SG

On the second count ...

Laddie, you've been looking for photos on ADF sites and can't find any vehicles or helicopters?

Did you even click-through the links I gave you?

For instance http://www.defence.gov.au/fotoweb/Grid.fwx leads to

Guess what? An ADF site with piccies! And just in case you tell me thats all Navy stuff (BTW there are helos in there) ... just do a keyword search for Army and Voila!

Better still ... if you do a key word search for Leopard ...

No tanks? No helos? Certainly no Leopard 2s thats for sure.

So you wanna tell us that ADF websites have no pictures of their equipment? That there is some secrecy thing?

BTW the picture of the dog is to illustrate that the website I provided for you has pictures of everything in the ADF, from all Tri Services, from SASR all the way down to the cooks and technicians and yes ... dogs too. Wink

kotay SG

You bet he should know better than all of us ... What he should know better is not to discuss classified matters with uncleared personnel or civilians ... whichever category you fall into.

And from what I can guess so far,I'm starting to think they must be secret,as I can not find any pictures of them,or many other ARMY vehicles.

Have a read around this forum sweetie, the standing rule is if you can't find open source proof, they don't exists.

If you insist some officers told you that and it should proof to be true, they'd be in very serious trouble. So if I were you, I'd just quietly drop the issue and let it lie that the ADF does not operate Leo 2s.

Gundams maybe but definately not Leo 2s Wink

Australia is very under-armed for a country that size as it is.

So there is absolutely NO need for Australia to conceal the existence of any weapon system - especially something as ordinary as a tank.

glock SG

Give the Aussie a break.

They have been very generous to the SAF by allowing us to use their airspace and armor training grounds.

We only wish our other friends can be as generous - we really wud like more jungle areas for training. How about Central America ?

Anyway the Aussies have M1A1s and its good to have friends who are well armed. Who cares now if they have Leo2s or not.

ozzy_gurl SG

Think whatever you like,if you choose not to believe me thats your own problem.I seriously couldn’t care less whether or not you believe me.I f you wanna believe the SAF are the only Army that has Leo2’s….go ahead, you’ll find out the truth eventually.

kotay SG

I couldn't care less too if they have or do not have Leo 2s ...

It's the way the "facts" are presented and the blithe evasions that bugs me.

Anyhow, if I ever get to meet ozzy_gurl, I'll buy him/her a XXXX and we'll have a laugh about this I'm sure. Wink

Then again, maybe I'll buy ozzy_gurl a Fosters just for laughs :p

So good luck on that drink, Kotay...

SingaporeTyrannosaur SG

What difference does it make if they do use Leo2s or not?

It's a moot argument, given now they have the M1A1, the modern MBT capabilities of Australia is not really an issue.

Could you have mistaken some other prefix your "sources" put infront of the Leopard for the Leopard 2? Prehaps they were really talking about the Leopard 1 all along. It makes little sense for me anyway, that the Aussies should operate two different kinds of modern MBT... unless of course they were following Malaysian arms purchase methods. Razz

BUT I would like to say that if it is really classified, you shouldn't be talking about it in the public domain.

Shotgun SG

Its not that aussieland is under armed for its size. Its Singapore thats over-armed for its size. =D

digger SG

Get off her back, the LEO2's were probably the ones that were here being evaluated over the years.
Singaporeans are the last ones that should jump down someones throat for this sort of stuff, have a trawl through this site and have a look at all the, Singapore "secretly" has this and Singapore is going to get that, crap.
